Are we Doomed? A Look at AI
Written by Howard Dallman
Everyone is talking about it. Many, including myself, have money invested in it. The talk of Artificial Intelligence is growing. And so are the concerns. The late Stephen Hawking warned that AI could lead to the end of mankind. Where machines control our lives. Many movies and television shows such as Star Trek. Have dabbled in the possibility of future-age robots in our lives. Science Fiction is now becoming a reality. And the U.S. government. As well as other countries are stumbling to address the dangers as well as the benefits of our future machines doing our work.
Hawking’s relationship with AI has a firm platform and history. But his relationship comes with deep concerns when he envisions superhuman AI where Harman's behavior is not only replicated. But self-expanding them without support. Yet Hawking’s ability to communicate all of his fears and ideas all come from and depend on basic AI technology.
Stephen Hawking was Born in 1942. A British citizen was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who, at the time of his death in 2018 was director of research at the University of Cambridge. Between 1979 and 2009, he was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, widely viewed as one of the most prestigious academic posts in the world. And had a BA from the University of Cambridge
Hawking was born in Oxford into a family of physicians. In October 1959, at the age of 17, he began his university education at University College, Oxford. Then began his graduate work at the University of Cambridge where, in March 1966, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Applied mathematics and theoretical physics. In 1963, at age 21, Hawking was diagnosed with an early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neuron disease that gradually, over decades, paralyzed him. After the loss of his speech, he communicated through a speech-generating device initially through the use of a handheld switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle. But he went on to do his best work in quantum mechanics
Stephen Hawking's worries come from the concept of AI involving computational technology that can make machines that function much as humans with behavior that mimics and surpasses human thinking, And could take off on their modifying themselves to be independent These self-thinking machines pose a threat to our existence He told the BBC: "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. But others are less gloomy about AI's prospects.
To define Artificial Intelligence as a noun from Webster's Dictionary;
“a branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers” The capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior.
But the best to come may be the worst. Imagen huge advancing armies fighting our wars. The threat of Nuclear war is now being replaced by the dangers of out-of-control robotics hoping to replace mankind Are these legitimate concerns? We are seeing advances in education, manufacturing, and robotics coming to life. But we are in the infancy stage. As we examine the risks and benefits of these technologies. So do we see the future of our work?
“The Biden Administration has addressed these possibilities by enacting a National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Task Force in June 2021” Research Resource Task Force” which will write the road map for expanding access to critical resources and educational tools that will spur AI innovation and economic prosperity nationwide”
But the dangers of mistakes, as well as robots turning on its controller, is a fitting aspect. To a subject being heated up by the news media. The air force simulated just that. But the air force has denied it has conducted an AI simulation in which a drone decided to “kill” its operator to prevent it from interfering with its efforts to achieve its mission An official said last month that in a virtual test staged by the US military, an air force drone controlled by AI had used “highly unexpected strategies to achieve its goal”.
So what did it do? It killed the operator. It killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective. Think of robot hands holding a smartphone and touching its blank screen. This is why the risk of extinction by AI should be a global priority, say experts
I wonder if AI was around during WW2. Seeing robots hit the beachheads of Omaha and the lives that would have been saved. Or in Vietnam. Or any war.
To open our eyes and ourselves to see the real AI. Let's look at some of their uses. For example TESLER. AI is used in Electric car manufacturing. Tesler's 5th generation computer was designed in 2021. And used to teach self-driving cars how to drive. But in August of that same year. The California Department of Motor Vehicles accused TESLER of engaging in deceptive practices around the marketing of its driver assistance systems, which are branded. Autopilot and Full Self Driving in the U.S., according to a filing with a state administrative agency. Elon Musk’s electric car business risks more than its reputation -- in a worst-case scenario, the company could temporarily lose the licenses which allow it to operate as a vehicle manufacturer and auto dealer in California.
In July 28 cases with California’s Office of Administrative Hearings, an official and attorneys for the DMV wrote:
“Instead of simply identifying product or brand names, these ‘Autopilot’ and ‘Full Self-Driving Capability’ labels and descriptions represent that vehicles equipped with the ADAS features will operate as an autonomous vehicle, but vehicles equipped with those ADAS features could not at the time of those advertisements, and cannot now, operate as autonomous vehicles.”
California DMV’s Deputy Director for the Office of Public Affairs, Anita Gore, told CNBC via e-mail that if the department prevails, it “will ask that Tesla will be required to advertise to consumers and better educate Tesla drivers about the capabilities of its ‘Autopilot’ and ‘Full Self-Driving’ features, including cautionary warnings regarding the limitations of the features, and for other actions as appropriate given the violations.”
Education
Something can be said of our students. As they face an overwhelming assault on books, gender identity, and racial biases. As education is being delegated by the far right where even words like “Gay” are a political issue and affecting the way our children. And their children will learn. Here comes AI
Artificial Intelligence has transformed almost every aspect of our lives, from driverless cars to Siri, and soon, education will be no different. The automation of a school or university’s administrative tasks and customization of student curricula is not only possible but imminent. The goal is for our computers to make human-like judgments and perform tasks to make educators’ lives easier, but if we’re not careful, these machines will replicate our racism,
Kids from Black and Latino or Hispanic communities—who are often already on the wrong side of the digital divide can face greater inequalities if we go too far toward digitizing education without considering how to check the inherent biases of the (mostly white) developers who create AI systems. AI is only as good as the information and values of the programmers who design it, and their biases can ultimately lead to both flaws in the technology and amplified biases in the real world.
This was the topic at the recent conference “Where Does Artificial Intelligence Fit in the Classroom?”, put on by the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Educational, “The Today AI”
But there is more to worry about than killer robots And racial teaching. CNNs Catherine Thorbecke. Story released on June 16 2023 Talks of members of Congress questioning AI CEOs such as Sam Altman about the potential for artificial intelligence tools to spread misinformation, disrupt elections and displace jobs, he and others in the industry went public with a much more frightening possibility: an AI apocalypse.
Altman is behind the viral chatbot tool ChatGPT, joined Google CEO Demis Hassabis, Microsoft’s CTO Kevin Scott as well as other AI researchers and business leaders in signing a one-sentence letter last month stating: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”
Despite this, Silicon Valley Top executives at some of the biggest tech companies are simultaneously telling the public that AI has the potential to bring about human extinction while also racing to invest in this technology into products that reach billions of people. And AI stock is becoming very profitable. As other companies in other countries also see growth in this industry.
And the devil is in the details. As the biggest AI person in AI Tesla CEO Elon Musk, said in a TV interview in April that AI could lead to “civilization destruction“AI .” But he remains deeply involved in the technology through investments across his sprawling business empire and has said he wants to create a rival to the AI offerings by Microsoft and Google.
The Russian war against Ukraine has placed AI technology on the war front lines for both sides. Drone technology has shown a rapid advance thanks to AI, and the information war landscape is shifting. AI is now in use for both spreading and debunking propaganda and disinformation. NPR reported this morning That small drones used by Ukraine have helped the war effort. Although they are small with limited distance, say one mile. They can tie explosives that can hit foxholes or open tank hatches. But NPR reports that the drones have now become little help due to the Russians transmitting waves to interfere with the drone's performance.
NPR's story calls for a temporary halt in the development of advanced artificial intelligence. On March 29 2023 release a story on all things considered story that an open letter signed by AI CEOs. More than 1000 of them all agreed that a six-month pause In an Interview. Peter Stone who sing the one-page letter. And is the associate and chair associate chair of computers. And is the associate and chair of science and director of robotics at the Univerassociate chair of science and director of robotics at the University of Texas. Thanks for joining us.
Peter Stone is one of the signatories to that letter. He is the associate chair of computer science and director of robotics at the University of Texas. Thanks for joining us.
STONE: So I think there is no incentive other than the agreement or the - you know, the moral compass, as is mentioned in the letter, of the people who are doing the development. And we're not likely to see the effect that the letter is directly calling for, but I think what it is going to do is raise public awareness of the need for, you know, understanding and the need for, if possible, taking some steps to sort of slow down and think a little bit more soberly about the next step before, you know, racing, as you said, to be the first to generate the next bigger model.
FLORIDO: Are you excited about the potential of artificial intelligence technology?
STONE: Oh. This is a fantastic time to be in the field of artificial intelligence. There are really exciting things happening, and I would not at all be in favor of stopping research on artificial intelligence. I identify very much in the letter with the statement that humanity can enjoy a flourishing future with artificial intelligence, but I don't think it'll happen automatically. I think we need to think very carefully about what we should do, not just what we can do when it comes to AI development. If we do it correctly, I think the world is going to become a much better place as a result of progress in artificial intelligence no matter the real dangers of AI.
When the Atom bomb was dropped on the Japanese cities killing over 250 thousand people. Many question its use. As they do today for AI. Technology must move forward. There are so many hands in this. And all are worried about AI. We can hope that we oversee and make the final decision on how AI could kill off mankind. Or indeed act now to avoid this two-sided sword of danger becoming a reality. And control the future of AI and the need for danger to be corrected.

Trona, home to Searles Lake playa, is located in the Searles Valley on Hwy 178 in the Greater Mojave Desert. Searles Lake is one of a chain of pleistocene lakes which were formed during the Ice Ages. The dry lake bed contains a plethora of sodium and potassium minerals of the carbonate, sulfate, borate and halide classes, due to long sedimentation and evaporation processes which occurred over a period of about 150,000 years.
The dry lake also contains the Trona Pinnacles National Natural Landma

BACKGROUND
In 1862 while prospecting for gold and silver in the Slate Range Mountains, John Searles’ engineer complained that soda from the salt pan to the west contained enough borax to interfere with its proper influence in refining ore. John also learned that borax was being mined north of San Francisco and that it was quite valuable - $1 per pound. That summer he prepared samples and with his brother Dennis visited the borax mining company. After an initial show of interest, the borax execut
